Getting Started

WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

My name is Jubilant James.

WHAT TYPE OF BUSINESS ARE YOU INTO?

E-commerce is my business.

WHAT MADE YOU TAKE THE LEAP INTO ENTREPRENEURSHIP?

It all started because I wanted to solve a problem. I know what it means to be poor, I came from such home. I had only one option START SOMETHING, MAKE MONEY, SUPPORT THE FAMILY. It really worked. I started entrepreneurship at the age of 11. Then I was selling kerosene at night in my home town Abiriba. Some years later, I went into teaching. I taught 3 subjects - Agricultural Science, Biology and Integrated Science for #5000 monthly salary. For good 5 months, I was not paid a kobo. I had to resign, leaving my 5 months salary behind. I did a few other work, with not very wonderful experience.
In those few years of working, I was still doing other entrepreneurial activities like preparing students for examination and selling stuff I picked from the market. But one thought was stronger in my spirit YOU WILL SOLVE MORE PROBLEMS AND MAKE MONEY WORKING FOR YOURSELF FULL TIME. I became responsible for my financial freedom and took my destiny into my hands and started fully what I am doing today - E-commerce.

WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST INITIAL HURDLES TO BUILD YOUR BUSINESS AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?

Well, i had some challenges like every other entrepreneur out there. But the biggest of all was finding the right team. Different business requires different team. It was really difficult building the right team for my kind of business. A lot of breakdown.

When I started my first 3 companies that went down, I thought that it was cool working with close friends as business partners. I selected my close friends as partners, you know why? Because I thought they would take the business so serious for the needed growth and expansion. But I was wrong, it does not work that way. Let me tell you, when you have your close friends as business partners, no one leads the other. Everyone's head is equal. That was what happened in my case. Your case may be different, but dont try it, it is risky. There was no CEO, the business ran as a democratic outfit. This made the companies to collapse. After the companies went down, my eyes opened. I then realized my mistakes and leant my lesson.

After that bitter experience, I decided to work with people who were more serious and qualified. No personal relationship. Business started unfolding productively. I learned that if you work with people not related to you, they will run your business so very well because if they don't, I guess you know what will follow. They will be fired straight up without delay to save the life of the company.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE YOU'VE MADE AS AN ENTREPRENEUR?

I trust people easily and most of them took advantage of it. One of the things that contributed to the collapse of my first 3 companies was trust. Yes, I trusted my partners 100% to the extent there was no legal document backing our terms of agreement up. They messed up the company and all the money invested went down the drain. It was not funny, but I moved on.

DID YOU EVER DEAL WITH CONTENTIONS FROM YOUR FAMILY CONCERNING YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL PURSUIT? AND HOW DID YOU HANDLE IT?

Yes, I did face Contentions. The type I faced was my family not supporting my choice of business. E-commerce made no meaning to them. They did not understand what it was all about. They saw it as YAHOO, YAHOO. The wanted me to go get a shop in Ngwa Road market in Aba and sell cloths or go get a job with fixed salary. It was not easy, I was seen as wayward. Every now and then, I was on a hot seat of questions and answer. To handle it, first of all, I left home, got my own house and became independent. I stopped telling them things I do. I stopped asking them for financial help; What I did was take my destiny into my hand and looked up to God for financial breakthrough.

DID YOU HAVE COMPETITORS WHEN YOU STARTED? AND HOW DID YOU COMPETE WITH THEM?

'Smiles' competitors? To say there are competitors will be under statement. E-commerce in Africa, if not world over, is an emerging market, I met chains of them and the number is expanding daily. But to be honest with you, I dont consider that as a threat; rather, I See them as an opportunity for innovation. Unlike a monopolistic market, E-commerce is driving by innovation and that is what and where I invest my time, energy and resources, not to outclass any of the so called competitors, but to offer quality, excellent and appealing products and services that keeps the customers coming back.

Watching other markets and just improving on what they are not doing well, can be very limiting, it is like they control your progress, which is disastrous for any business. I simply look out for needs or problems within the reach of what I do, then create the solution and then the money follows. Competition breeds problems, cooperation breeds success. That I am not controlled by what others do does not mean I go solo, no. There is a place to cooperate and do something bigger and better than what a single effort can accomplish.

I believe the sky is too large for one star to outshine the other. The forest is too big for two elephants to collide. Everyone is in his place of assignment and am in my own space, fulfilling purpose and solving problems for humanity.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A BUSINESS PARTNER?

To be my business partner, there are at least four things I expect you to have. Without them, forget it, we can't do business together. The first is, you must be creative. I guess you don't expect me to always tell you what to do at any point in time. I expect my business partner to know what to do per time without anyone telling him. I hate telling someone "Do this" "Do that" all the time.
The second one is that I expect my business partner to be committed. You can't separate commitment and creativity. They walk together; commitment is the mother of creativity. So to be creative, you must be committed.

I love humility. So as my business partner, you must be humble. You see proud people and liars? I avoid them so much. With humility, I know one can achieve whatever he desires. When I see people who has excellence, it gives me joy. Daily, I reengineer, my drive for excellence so I can be on top of my game while attracting like minds. So, to be my business partner, you must be addicted to excellence in your area of specialty.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST MOMENTS OF SUCCESS IN YOUR BUSINESS?

Every good entrepreneur focuses on doing one thing in business, that is solving people's problem. When you solve people's problem, they will trust you with their money. So the greatest moment of success in my business is the time I see my business putting smiles on people's faces by solving their problems. My own definition of success is not about material acquisition, it is about solving problems for humanity and that is my hobby; it gives me joy and money off course.

IN CONCLUSION SIR, WHAT WILL YOU ADVISE YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS TO DO WHEN STARTING A NEW BUSINESS?

Well ! The very first thing I always tell young entrepreneurs, is "believe in yourself". As someone starting a new business, you know it's not easy to run a business. You need to first of all believe you can do it. Believe in your abilities to make it happen. Many people will try to talk you out of your dream, but do not listen to them. Focus and follow your dream. Consistency is key in entrepreneurship. Follow one course until it becomes successful. I tell you, consistency is one thing that has helped me come this far.

Then learn to network with the right people. Believe me, no great entrepreneur ever existed without having the right network. If you hangout with successful people, you will contact the virus. If you hangout with great entrepreneurs, you are not likely to fail in your business. Everyone must not be your friend. Keep off from negative network.

As a newbie in entrepreneurship, I advise you get a coach or mentor. Yes, you need it so you won't make unnecessary mistakes. Your coach will guide you on the appropriate steps to take per time in your entrepreneurial journey.

Integrity and excellence are to factors you must not joke with. Show me an entrepreneur who focuses on money alone without integrity and excellence, and I will show you a failed business. Provide your customers with excellent work and money will look for you. If you remove integrity in business, that business will collapse. Dont experiment this, build trust in your business, be transparent and sincere if you must last on board.

The G-FACTOR is my strongest business factor. Embrace God. Let Him be the Lord of your business, One of the secrets of successful businesses around the world is the G-FACTOR. Put God first in your business. Serve Him with your whole self and be a blessing to humanity with your money. He is the one that gives you power to make wealth. Let Him take the lead.
Thank you!!!
